No cancer, including melanoma, can ever
be prevented with 100% certainty. The
good news is the risk factors for melanoma
are well known, so steps can be taken
to dramatically reduce one's risk of
developing this deadly disease.
Melanoma
Prevention Tips
- Do not sunbathe.
- Avoid unnecessary sun exposure,
especially between 10:00 a.m. and
4:00 p.m.
- When outdoors, use sunscreens
rated SPF 15 or higher. Apply them
liberally, uniformly, and frequently
- at least an hour before going
into the sun and again after swimming
or sweating.
- When exposed to sunlight, wear
protective clothing such as long
pants, long-sleeved shirts, broad-brimmed
hats, and UV-protective sunglasses.
- Stay away from artificial tanning
devices.
- Teach your children good sun protection
habits at an early age: The damage
that leads to adult skin cancers
starts in childhood, for people
are likely to receive about 80%
of their lifetime sun exposure during
the first 18 years of life
- Examine your skin head to toe
at least once every three months.
Examine all moles or markings, and
look for any changes in the number,
size, shape, or color of these markings.
